Google Calender - The Productive App that contribute a lot to our daily life but we often disregard it

Google Calender is a time-management and scheduling calendar service developed by Google. It became available in beta release April 13, 2006, and in general release in July 2009, on the web and as mobile apps for the Android and iOS platforms. (Wikipedia).

Google Calender is a productive app that you cannot leave behind and I will let you fall in love with it as you read this post of mine.

In Ghana, organisations and companies turn to spend huge money in printing of Calenders yearly for distribution to its stakeholders. Unfortunately with the current hardship in the country, the 2023 budget which was read by the Finance Minister lately in parliament urges government organisations and businesses to stop the printing of Calenders in other to save funds for important expenditures.

Research shows that, 8.8 million of Ghanaians uses social media daily and I begin to wonder if even about 10% of this number know and use Google Calender as it is supposed to be used? I think the answer is a big NO.

Let us now dive into the great features of Google Calender that you have no idea of:

  • WORKS ON COMPUTER AND ALL SMART DEVICES
Google Calender works on all computers (Windows, Linux, Mac) and all smart devices (Windows, Android, Iphone). This shows that no individual has been left out as in this digital age, almost    everyone owns one of the aforementioned devices.

  • REQUIRES GOOGLE ACCOUNT (GMAIL) FOR BACKUP PURPOSES
Google Calender requires google account for backup purposes. Similarly as contacts are synced with the google account for safe backup, storage and easy retrieval on any device, so is Google Calender. When your device get stolen and missing, you can continue to access the same Calender on the new device as you log in with your google account.

  • CREATES MORE THAN ONE CALENDER FOR DIFFERENT PURPOSES
Google Calender allow you add new calenders for different purposes. For example, you can have one calender which have events of work duty roaster and also have another one which bears school time table. The question that comes to mind is, if I have about 10 calenders, do I have to go through all everyday? The answer is no, you only have one calender you go through which shows all events in all the 10 created calenders.

  • CREATES AND EDIT EVENTS, SET REMINDERS
With Google Calender, you can creates events as and when you require, you can also edit the events anytime you realise there are errors in them and the corrected events take effect on every shared calender. With the printed calender, you are pressured to prepare all events date before printing and after printing, errors cannot be corrected.

You can also set reminders on Google Calender with time, so that you are being notified with alarm when the time is due. This is one particular thing that affect alot of us, we turn to forget events, to do list and meetings we have to attend. You can also set reminders of renewals of stuff that expire (pins, NHIA Card, subscriptions). This has really help me alot as I always get notified to renew my NHIA Card and that of my family members. Those who also turn to forget the birthdays of their spouse, children and parent, Google Calender is there to help you.

  • ADD LOCATION AND ATTACH DOCUMENT
When creating events, you can add location to the event to help users identify the place of events. There is totally impossible with the printed calender.

You can also add attachments in the form of documents (doc, ppt, pics etc.) to the events. For example, if you have a presentation to make, you can attached the ppt to the event so in case you forget your presentation or presentation get corrupted on pendrive, you can retrieve it easily there.

  • GOOGLE CALENDER CAN BE SHARED
As we are in the verge to usher in a new year 2023, organisations and individuals can create their calenders with all the holidays and events in them and share to all stakeholders at no cost than to print at a huge cost.

You can also share the calender through emails, social media platforms, bluetooth and on xender.

  • GOOGLE CALENDER IS RECURRING
Another great feature of the Google Calender is that, those events which are repeated yearly keeps repeating on the calender and there is not need to create those events yearly unless there are update you would like to make on them. For example, events like birthdays, Pin or NHIA card renewal is recurring so whiles you create them this year, you get notified every other year as we grow.

These and other features of Google Calender which I could not write on will be demonstrated on my next post.

Therefore, Schools, Professional bodies, organisations and individuals should take advantage of this post as I will share in my next post the practical examples with pictures how these features can be created on the calender.
